Galaxy Groups in the Sdss Dr4: Iii. the Luminosity and Stellar Mass Functions

چکیده
Using a large galaxy group catalogue constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4) with an adaptive halo-based group finder, we investigate the luminosity and stellar mass functions for different populations of galaxies (central versus satellite; red versus blue; and galaxies in groups of different masses) and for groups themselves. The conditional stellar mass function (CSMF), which describes the stellar distribution of galaxies in halos of a given mass for central and satellite galaxies can be well modeled with a log-normal distribution and a modified Schechter form, respectively. On average, there are about 3 times as many central galaxies as satellites. Among the satellite population, there are in general more red galaxies than blue ones. For the central population, the luminosity function is dominated by red galaxies at the massive end, and by blue galaxies at the low mass end. At the very low-mass end (M∗ . 10 h M⊙), however, there is a marked increase in the number of red centrals. We speculate that these galaxies are located close to large halos so that their star formation is truncated by the large-scale environments. The stellar-mass function of galaxy groups is well described by a double power law, with a characteristic stellar mass at ∼ 4×10hM⊙. Finally, we use the observed stellar mass function of central galaxies to constrain the stellar mass halo mass relation for low mass halos, and obtain M∗,c ∝ M h for Mh ≪ 10 hM⊙. Galaxy Groups in the Sdss Dr4: I. the Catalogue and Basic Properties
We use a modified version of the halo-based group finder developed by Yang et al. to select galaxy groups from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR4). In the first step, a combination of two methods is used to identify the centers of potential groups and to estimate their characteristic luminosity. Using an iterative approach, the adaptive group finder then uses the average mass-to-light ratio...
متن کاملStellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

We investigate various galaxy occupation statistics of dark matter halos using a large galaxy group catalogue constructed from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4) with an adaptive halo-based group finder. The conditional luminosity function (CLF), which describes the luminosity distribution of galaxies in halos of a given mass, is measured separately for all, red and blue gal...
متن کاملThe optical and near-infrared properties of galaxies. I. Luminosity and stellar mass functions
We use a large sample of galaxies from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to calculate galaxy luminosity and stellar mass functions in the local Universe. We estimate corrections for passband shifting and galaxy evolution, as well as present-day stellar mass-to-light (M/L) ratios, by fitting the optical–near-infrared galaxy data with simple models. Acc...
متن کاملThe massive end of the luminosity and stellar mass functions and clustering from CMASS to SDSS: Evidence for and against passive evolution
We describe the luminosity function, based on Sersic fits to the light profiles, of CMASS galaxies at z ∼ 0.55. Compared to previous estimates, our Sersic-based reductions imply more luminous, massive galaxies, consistent with the effects of Sersicrather than Petrosian or de Vaucouleur-based photometry on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) main galaxy sample at z ∼ 0.1. This implies a signific...
